Yes, timing lights measure both timing and RPM – mine does. And, it has a 2 and 4 cycle setting for the reasons mentioned in the discussions. I knew that the wasted spark design would not affect the timing function. But I expected it to read twice the real rpm when on the 4 cycle setting because of the wasted spark design and the fact that it uses an inductive pick up on a spark plug. Thanks for confirming that for me. The problem is, I dont think it actually is reading twice the rpm – but rather the correct RPM, just based on the way the engine sounds, so I am going to find another way to check it, as one person suggested. I am not sure that a conventional tach that connects to the points will work on this magneto design, however.

It is not complete, and I do not know any source to go to for all the small details. These tops are not easy to install and I suggest that you go to an experienced upholstery shop to have the work done. It is virtually impossible using words to explain how to install one of these tops. Al Knoch sells videos that teach you how to install these tops.

June 27, It’s Alive! I lashed everything together this afternoon enough for a test fire. Quite a thrill when the engine fired and the tach needle jumped to life. The guy I got the tach from told me it had been on his shelf for 15 years so I had my doubts about it. If nothing else I expected to have to switch the wires between the dizzy and coil because of wrong polarity but I didn’t even have to do that.

I made short U-shaped jumper wires from 14 solid wire to connect my two female plugs together. I flattened the ends of the copper wire to a blade shape to slip into the plugs. I may come up with a better idea for that but it may serve the purpose if I tape everything up really well. I’m going to keep an eye out at Pull and Save for the correct male plug end if they might have been used on other model Datsuns. I know your tach write-up saved me a huge amount of time. MikeRL – I did have to use 14 wire although I’m not happy about it.

My local place didn’t have 12 bullet connectors.

The different knob positions just changes what it reads. The tach part measures the opening cycle of the points and gives you the rpm. Dwell setting measures the amount of time the points are closed and reads out in degrees. The points setting is an ohm meter. It measures the resistance of the points being closed and it’s needle tells you when the points are good or bad if the condenser is bad or the coil is bad.

dwell/tachometer/voltmeter (haynes repair manuals) Checkspark engine ignition analyzer Otc. I go for the small end of the range given in the manual to get more dwell.

The problem is that people fit voltmeters wired to the green circuit, which can be a couple of volts lower than the solenoid i. It’s battery voltage which is important, and any volt-drop between there and the green circuit is down to ageing connections, and the best alternator in the world isn’t going to cure them, although it may cover them up. This was the case in the 5-pin 2-plug 16ACR from 69 to Initially the 3-pin single-plug alternators used machine sensing i.

This is a ‘2-wire’ alternator. Clausager states that a new version of the 16ACR with modified regulator and surge protection was provided in March Possibly because of problems with low battery voltage, in the alternators seem to have reverted to battery sensing again Clausager states the 17ACR was fitted from February 73 now with an additional thin brown in the alternator plug wired back to the solenoid as before, and this seems to have remained the case up to and including the 77 model year at least.

Are there any changes that I need to make in my wiring and connections? The points distributor used a resistance to lower the voltage to the points in the run position to prevent wear on the points. This was done with either an external ballast resistor or a resistance wire in the ignition circuit depending on the year of the car. When converting to an HEI there are three issues which must be addressed.

The first concerns the resistance in the run circuit. The second concerns the gauge of wire feeding the HEI distributor.

Ignition distributors mounted at the firewall end of the engine, and the breaker points and condenser were difficult to replace. In the late ’40s and s, professionals turned to distributor strobe machines and worked on the ignition with the distributor removed from the engine. The newly designed ignition afforded ready access for breaker point adjustment. Dwell angle settings and point gap changes could be made with the cap in place and the engine running.

This eliminated the cumbersome, repetitive removal of the distributor cap while performing a tune-up in the engine bay. This ‘ ’61 application is smaller in diameter at the cap to permit installation of two WCFB carburetors. From ’74, single-point Corvette distributors have window caps. Most ‘ ’65 mechanically fuel-injected engines feature a unique, dual-point window cap distributor.

Some later applications use a transistorized distributor. The window in the distributor cap provides access to a set of redesigned points that use a horizontally positioned breaker-point adjuster screw.

This could explain your almost double tach readings. Why not run a new white wire from the ignition switch to the tach and then onto the coil. Just disconnect the current wire going from the switch to the coil and see if that makes a difference.

An analog multimeter can be used to test any number of functioning electrical parts on your vehicle or small engine. Everything from your distributor to the variances in your alternator or even the ignition coils. A simple attachment can read the magnetic field pulses coming through a wire or coil, letting you gauge by how many pulses a second the Rpm of a motor is. Once you have the inductive pickup attachment set up you will be reading to begin checking the rpm of your motor. This can be any motor that has a spark plug ignite in it, from lawn mowers and chain saws, to cars and trucks.

Step 2 – Clamping your Inductive Pickup Attachment Clamp the attachment around the spark plug cable, between the spark plug housing and the distributor. Plug the socket end in here and watch the results. More advanced analog multimeter’s may have this multiple socket function as other models do not. The more charges, the higher the Rpm of the motor.

Step 3 – Reading the Results Once your analog multimeter is connected and ready to go, turn on your engine.

History[ edit ] The first mechanical tachometers were based on measuring the centrifugal force , similar to the operation of a centrifugal governor. The inventor is assumed to be the German engineer Dietrich Uhlhorn ; he used it for measuring the speed of machines in In automobiles, trucks, tractors and aircraft[ edit ] Cessna ‘s G tachometer 1, RPM and engine hours This can assist the driver in selecting appropriate throttle and gear settings for the driving conditions.

May 24,  · I picked up a used Sun Dwell Tachometer to use when tuning my idle and advance. But I don’t know how to hook it up. Its got a orange (maybe faded red) and a black clip.

Tue Nov 06, 2: Will a pict work with distributor? The 30 PICT carburetors can all be interchanged and run with the distributor. As stated above, there are better stock options. Colin please note that the vacuum advance in all of the 30 series carburetors had drillings that supplied a vacuum signal based on overall venturi air speed as well as manifold vacuum. That means, unlike the 34 Pict 3, the signal did not drop out entirely under full load at high rpm While I am far from an expert on carburetors I’m going to stand behind my date ranges as originally stated not the corrections provided by Amskeptic Pretty sure the only issue here is WHEN was the change from PICT2 to PICT3.

Knowing VW it may have not been at the beginning of a model year as the the , and engines were very similar I think had that throttle positioner, not sure about earlier? This changeover also apparently marked the change from M to T dizzy’s? Never having studied it too closely, I notice NONE of these dizzy’s has specific part numbers, though the type 2 did. Rust, heat and end play. It was not the original motor but had been rebuilt using a Mexican case 87mm slipinsbetween the M and T is that the and the original parts.

The first owner stopped me one and told me this replacement motor had taken him on the mile midwest to Alaska trip FOUR times.

The engine, a ci straight-six high-pressure Thriftmaster, has the reputation for being a very dependable workhorse — and we would agree when rated against other engines of the time. When compared to modern engines with technological advanced ignition systems, the old stovebolt engine would serve a better purpose as a boat anchor than a combustion engine. There are more of those old engines out there than you would think. A rich mixture is easier to burn, but is not very efficient.

Oct 24,  · Just FYI all I did was hook the $20 Pep Boys Sunpro special up like the instructions said, and I used very thick out-of-place-looking wire to make sure it had the best signal it could get.

August 5, As I recall, the late GM points distrubutors had a trap-door in the side. Then hook up a dwell tachometer and, with the engine running, adjust the screw until the dwell is within spec. I don’t recall the exact spec off the top of my head, but 28 to 32 degrees rings a bell. Feeler gauges cannot be used with these distributors because there is stuff in the way. Dwell tachs are not as common as they once were. If you go to your local NAPA store, they may not know what you are talking about, but it is in their catalog and they can get it for you.

You have it pegged exactly. The GM window distributor is the easiest distributor ever to adjust points Maybe it was a patent issue, who knows?

October 12, Have decided that I really want to know what kind of RPM’s the engine in my ’41 is putting out at highway speeds rather than depending on the mph to rpm chart in shop manual because I have 15″ rims vs. I have tried to exercise due diligence by querying prior postings and have only come up with one by ZondaC12 relating to switching wires on a volt tach in his ’38 until the needle stopped jumping around. Nothing was said about how many wires and where they were finally connected.

Per my note taped to the meter, I attached the red clamp to the dist. Since I don’t have the meter’s instructions, I don’t know if the meter was for use only with volt systems, and use on my 6-volt system would give questionable readings. The major drawback of my meter is that it only goes to rpms. Since I realized early on in my college career in my failed attempt to became an electrical engineer, I assume nothing when it comes to electricity and always ask questions.

There happens to be a couple of 6-volt Sun tach sending units on ebay, but no tachs from that era.
